Books
Learning to fly seaplanes does not involve much theoretical learning
beyond what you learned as a landplane pilot, but it is very useful to be familiar with the
quirks and procedures involved in flying seaplanes before you start your training.
Instant Gratification!

Alright, you've read through the majority of this flight training primer, and you're itching to
read more. No problem! We've made Chapter 15 (Seaplanes) of the FAA's Flight Training Handbook (AC 61-21A)
available online (PDF, 218KB). While this text
will not make you an expert, it's a good theoretical introduction to flying seaplanes.

Further Reading

For a more in-depth look at flying seaplanes, the following books (in alphabetical order) are invaluable:

- Bush Pilot, Pierre Rivest
- Practical tips, great diagrams, and a unique section on ski flying make this intermediate book popular with
back woods pilots.
- Fly a Seaplane, by Gordon Newstrom
- Similar to J.J. Frey's book, and includes a set of lesson plans.
- Flying a Floatplane, C. Marin Faure
- Sections on owner maintenance and turbine operations give this intermediate book an interesting twist.
- Flying Boats for Recreation, Gladen Robert Hamilton
- A good Multi-Engine Sea syllabus and hull-type aircraft descriptions set this book apart from the crowd.

but will soon be published electronically in the members-only section of SPA's web site.
- How to Fly Floats, by J.J. Frey

- Notes of a Seaplane Instructor, Burke Mees
- An easy-reading introduction to flying seaplanes, a popular alternative to How to Fly Floats.
- Seaplane Operations, Dale DeRemer and Cesare Baj
- A wide breadth of information makes this the "bible" of seaplane operations.
- Seaplane Pilot, Dale DeRemer

- Step Up to Floats, John M. Rennie
- The official training manual of Jack Brown's Seaplane Base in Florida.
