Copalis Beach State Airport runway maintenance work complete
COPALIS – Copalis Beach State Airport reopened today, Tuesday, March 13, as crews completed maintenance work, installing new navigation and safety aids, and improved airport information signs.
The safety project at Copalis is in coordination with Washington State Parks and Recreation and included relocating the northern runway marker approximately 740 feet to the south. The new location is more consistent with the runway’s historic landing boundary. Crews also replaced a missing runway end marker near the Copalis River, and installed new signs at Boone Creek and a new wind cone.
The Washington State Department of Transportation Aviation will now survey the airport, reviewing the effects of ongoing river migration and runway erosion caused by the ocean. Preliminary surveys indicated these factors may have shortened the runway by more than 1,000 feet.
WSDOT asks that pilots continue to take off and land between the visible north and south runway end markers only. The runway end markers are orange reflective signs with black arrows pointing either north or south.
Copalis Beach State Airport is one of 17 airports operated by WSDOT and is the only known beach airport in Washington state. Learn more about the Copalis Beach State Airport.
Pilots are encouraged to check the Federal Aviation Administration’s Notices to Airmen for more information.
